The Owl

     The Owl is said to be the oldest wisest being in the forest.  He has "... great yellow eyes."(p.51) and he answers questions only at dusk.

Characters in chapters one through five

Mrs. Frisby

     Mrs. Frisby is "...the head of a family of field mice..." (p.3), that lives in a cinder block on a farm.  "Mrs. Frisby wakes up early..." (p.5) and, even though she's a single mom, she is able to sustain her family of five, and give her children a good life.

Timothy

     Timothy has "... a dark complexion, like his father and brother, Martin" (p.10).  He is a bit of a hypocondriac, but he actualy is  ill with pneumonia.

Teresa

     "Teresa, the oldest..." (p.7) of Mrs. Frisby's children is very concerned about Timothy when he says that he can't get up.

Martin

     Of Mrs. Frisby's children, Martin is "...the biggest, a strong, quick mouse, dark hairedand handsome like his poor father."(p.7).

Cynthia

     Cynthia is the youngest in the family.  She is "... light haired, and in fact a little light headed as well, and over fond of dancing."(p.7).

Dragon the Cat 

     Dragon is farmer Fitzgibbon's cat.  His name was originally a joke name that Mrs. Fitzgibbon gave him, "...when he was a small kitten trying to be fierce ."(p.21).

Mr. Ages

     "Mr. Ages is a white mouse..."(p.12) who lives "... in a house that's part of an old brick wall."(p.12)

Jeremy the Crow

     Jeremy is a crow with "... powerful wings..."(p.25) who owes Mrs. Frisby a favor.

Mr. Fitzgibbon

     Mr. Fitzgibbon is a farmer who owns a tractor, which he uses for many things, like "... hauling hay and firewood for instance, and mowing the grass, and clearing snow..."(p.33), and plowing.

Paul Fitzgibbon 

     paul Fitzgibbon, Farmer Fitzgibbon's older son, is 15 and he's a "... quiet hard working boy, rather clumsy in his movements but strong and careful about his chores."(p.34).

Billy Fitzgibbon

     Billy Fitzgibbon is Farmer Fitzgibbon's younger son . he is 13 and he "... is noisier and has the annoying habit of skimming rocks across the field at anything that moves."(p.34).

The Old Lady Shrew

     The Old Lady Shrew is "... a tiny thing, scarcely bigger than a peanut but with wit as sharp as her teeth."(p.30).

Setting

     In Robert C.O'Brien's book "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh", the protagonist, Mrs. Frisby, lives with her family "...in an under ground house in the vegetable garden of a farmer named Fitzgibbon."(p.3).
